#SelfcareisNOTSelfish

We can often find it easier to take care of others than ourselves. This workshop explores why that is, emphasizes that our number one job is to keep ourselves filled up, and also provides some rock-solid tips for preventing burnout and learning to love what you do again.

*This one is also quite popular and can work for lots of different groups such as Student Affairs, Health Care Workers, Teachers, Counselors, and anyone else in the helping professions. It is very possible to tweak this workshop for the business world as well, with a twist on “work/life integration.”

Optimism as a Lifestyle

It takes courage to be happy. This interactive workshop helps participants to unveil their own “explanatory style,” as well as to understand how this affects our daily interactions at school, work, and with our relationships. We will discuss the importance of ridding ourselves of the 3 P’s of pessimism.

Trauma & Resilience

This is a content heavy presentation delivered in a way that is digestible to bring trauma-informed education to middle schools, high schools, colleges, universities. The T & R presentation also works well for medical and mental health agencies, police, EMT’s, and firefighters. We will discuss what trauma is, how it differs from big stress, how trauma rewires the brain, and resilience strategies for healing and moving forward with confidence.

*I have done this in a larger level as a keynote, and it can also be tweaked for a smaller, interactive group

Teach Them How to Fish

This presentation is specifically designed for parents of first-year college students. I started this for “Family Weekend” at Champlain College where I teach some years ago, and was wonderfully pleased with its success. My largest credential was not the doctorate in psychology, but that my husband and I have 5 young adults who all went to college, so I get it. This workshop is highly interactive where parents have the opportunity to share what it is on their minds with this big life change.

Social Media and the Impact on Well-being

Here I discuss the research I have done on the impact of social media on college students’ well-being. There is a large focus on the detriments of the social comparison that naturally occurs from engaging with social media, primarily mental health. We will discuss “disconnected connection,” the effects that too much screen time and not being fully present have on our well-being, as well as how to lean into some healthier habits for long-lasting happiness.

Spirituality, Meaning & Purpose

This presentation has its roots in the work of Columbia University’s Lisa Miller on, “The Awakened Brain.” We will discuss the spirituality crisis going on with young adults today and how a strong inner life serves as protection against depression. This interactive discussion also has some very cool hands-on activities which help to reveal one’s true passion, and ultimately leads to a sense of authentic meaning and purpose.

Spirituality, Meaning & Purpose

The detriments of enabling avoidance behavior in anxious college students, and why we need to make a shift toward strength and resilience-based education

This discussion will address the current challenges of educating and working with anxious young adults, primarily the obstacles resulting from maladaptive avoidance behavior. Some of these avoidant behaviors may include excessive late arrivals and absences, frequent requests for extensions on assignments, excuses for missing exams, resistance with class presentations and participation, frequent leaving while class is in session, and the role of social media. We will begin with a brief explanation of what anxiety is, where it occurs in the brain, and why the worry circuit’s inherent self-reinforcing system is at the root of faculty frustration. We will then wind up with some strategies for managing anxiety in and out of the classroom, including some helpful tips for managing accommodations successfully.
